1990년대 3Dfx가 세계를 재패하고 있을때로 돌아가보자, Nvidia는 TNT 그레픽 칩셋을 개발중이었고, 조금후 GeForce를 만들었다. 다른 S3, Matrox, Intel과 같은 회사들도 있었다. ATI는 Rage 계열을 만들었다. 그뒤 3D Rage II+, Rage Pro Turbo, Rage 128 Pro, Rage 128GL, Rage LT Pro 등등이다.
R100 (Radeon)
Rage!
어떤사람은 무언가에 화가났을거라는 생각도 할수 있다. 뭐 어쨌든 3D는 3Dfx와 Nvidia가 모두 차지하고 있었으니까. ATI의 2D는 아주 놀라웠다. 칩도 많이 팔려나갔다. 하지만 3D 품질은, 특히 드라이버에서 최악이었다. 그래서 문제에 대하여 절망하고 있는 대신, 그에대한 조취를 취했다. 2004년 4월 하드웨어에서 Transform & Lighting 를 지원하는 GPU를 발표했다. 그리고 데스크탑에서 필요한 기능들을 갖추고 있었다. 내부적으로 Rage 6라는 코드명이 있었지만, Radeon 이라는 이름으로 불리게 되었다.
경쟁사와 비교해서 최고의 성능은 아니었지만, 아주 만족할만한 수준이었다. id의 존 카멕과 같은 게임 개발자들은 아주 멋지고, 정교한 물건이라고 생각을 했다. 특히 미래 게임에서 아주 멋진 역활을 할것이라 생각했다.
문제가 있긴 했지만.
출시시의 드라이버 지원은 역시나 열악했다. 굉장한 하드웨어는 맞지만, 소프트웨어가 받쳐주질 못했다. 32비트에서 잘 동작했지만 16비트 컬러에서 이상한 에러가 발생하기도 했다. ATI는 16비트 대신 32비트를 사용하라고 하고 싶었지만, 수많은 게임이 16비트에 최적화 되어있었다. ATI는 경쟁사에 뒷쳐지는일이 자주 있었고, 벤치마크 결과도 좋지 않았다. 하지만 ATI는 또다른 무언가가 있었다. 바로 게임.
ATI는 Radeon 64MB와 32MB의 두가지 제품을 내놓았다. 모든 Radeon은 같은 코어를 가지고 있어서 오버클러킹도 비교적 쉬웠다. 하지만, Radeon에 대한 루머가 돌기 시작했다. 낮은 클럭의 일부 기능이 없는 카드는 아주 싸게 구할수 있다. 역시 이러한 카드는 진짜로 존재했다. 낮은 MHz의 코어/메모리에 BIOS 명령이 조금 적었고, 드라이버에서 몇가지 기능이 제한되었다. 이러한 카드는 아주 구하기 쉬었고, Radeon LE 카드를 보통의 가격에 산사람들이 보통의 속도에서 모든 기능을 사용할수 있었다. 나 또한 이러한 해택을 누렸었다.

R200 (8500)
R200은 Radeon 8500으로 알려진 그레픽 코어이다. 이미 R100 코어에서 입증된 성능을 혁신적으로 끌어올렸다. ATI는 저클럭의 8500LE도 출시했다. 그때 ATI는 Radeon 7xxx시리즈를 소개하기 시작했다. R100 코어의 많은 변종으로, 조금 클럭이 높은 것도 있었지만, 대부분 낮았고, 몇가지 기능은 제한 되었다. 이러한 코어는 RV100 / RV200또는 비슷한 이름으로 알려져 있다.
R200 시리즈를 지나 혁신적인것은 "Trufrom"과 "Smoothvision"이다. R200에서는 삼각형을 이용해 3D 이미지를 만들며, 구부러진 표면에서 삼각형이 나타나는 방식으로 수많은 삼각형으로 이미지를 새로 만들어 낸다. 그렇게 함으로써 더 자연스럽게 보이게 한다. Truform은 R200의 방식에 기반을 둔것이다.
이러한 방식은 아주 좋은 발상이었지만, 많은 개발자들의 지원을 받지 못했다.
Smoothvision은 필요한 샘플링 픽셀들만을 AA 처리시 유선형으로 만드는 Anti-aliasing의 새로운 형태였다.
아주 효과적이며 성능이 좋았다. 또다시 이 기능은 주목받지 못하고, 사라져 버렸다. ATI는 계속해서 더 좋은 드라이버 지원을 발표했지만, 여러사람들은 그렇게 생각하지 않는다.

R300 (9700)
Radeon 날개를 달다! R300은 엄청나게 큰 사건이었다. R600은 9700과 9700Pro, 9500/9500Pro(RV300) 시리즈로 출시되었다. 기적의 연속이었다. 카드는 엄청나게 광고를 했고, 아주 유명해졌다. 이때 Nvidia는 조금늦게 GeForce FX 계열을 출시했다. 거의 모든 성능이 뒤쳐졌었다.
9500시리즈는 완전히 똑같은 기능을 가지고 있었지만 메모리 대역폭이 반으로 줄었고, 파이프라인의 수도 반이었다. 하지만 R300 시리즈를 이야기할때는 대부분 9500 Pro 에 대해 이야기한다.
왜냐면, 실제로 9700 Pro였던 9500 Pro가 많았기 때문이다. ATI는 이러한것에 빨리 조취를 취하려고 했지만, 자신들이 최초 써킷 보드를 9700 Pro와 똑같이 준것이었다. 정말 아주 작은 레지스터 몇개가 파이프라인의 반을 제한하고 있었고 소프트웨어에서 아주 쉬게 강제로 수정을해 완전한 기능을 사용할수 있었다. 그래서 RV300은 엄청나게 인기가 많았다. 엄청나게 많은 사이트들에서 이러한 방법을 소개했었다. 우리들은 하드웨어/소프트웨어 방식으로 이러한 기쁨을 누릴수 있었지만 ATI는 아주 열받아 있었다.
하지만 ATI가 9500 Pro를 수정하기 못하는 새로운 버젼을 내놓았지만, 모든사람들의 이미 R300이라는 녀석이 마음에 있었다.
ATI가 사람들의 마음을 얻기 위해 또 필요한것은. 바로 드라이버 지원이다. 초기 출시시에는 드라이버는 완전 고물이었다. 계속적인 드라이버 출시로 성능 향상과, 화질 향상("치트"드라이버도 출시된적 있다) 이 있었다.

R350 (9800)
속도 향상, Anti Aliasing, Anisotropic filtering이 좋아졌다. R300도 이미 아주 좋은 녀석이었지만, 디자인에서 한단계 성장했다. 9800(R350)은 9700에 비해 많이 빨라지지는 않았지만(5~10%정도), Anti-Aliasing과 Anisotropic filtering을 켰을때의 성능저하가 대폭 줄었다. Quake 3, Half-Life 2를 더 높은 해상도에서 즐길수 있었다. AA/AF를 켠 상태에서 더 높은 프레임을 볼수 있었다.
9600(RV350)은 회로 선폭은 미세화(Die shrink) 실험에 쓰였다. 9600 카드는 0.13 micron 공정이 되었고, 더 조용하게 동작했다. 일반 9600는 방열판위에 쿨러조차 필요하지 않았다. 9500과 비교했을때 AA/AF를 켰을때도 성능은 같았고, 9700/9800의 차이와 같다. 오버클러커들에게는 나쁜 소식이지만 ATI는 9500 Pro의 실수를 되풀이 하지 않았다.

이러한 일들이 2004년 봄까지의 일이다. 이제 각 카드를 비교해보자. 측정방법과 비교대상 카드는 다음과 같다:

각 세대별 차이를 보면 아주 놀랍다. 오리지널 Radeon과 비교했을때 9800은 괴물같은 속도를 보여준다. 현재는 9800을 가볍게 넘기는 x800과 x1800/x1900 시리즈가 나와있다. 이러한 것은 무어의 법칙을 따르지 않는다.
ATI는 그들의 성과를 자랑스럽게 여겨야 한다. Radeon 계열의 성능은 만족할 수준이며, 세계의 그레픽 시장의 2 top 중의 하나이다.
나에게 한가지 궁금한 점이 있는데 Radeon과 GeForce 두 브랜드에 해당하는 것이다: 얼마나 그 이름을 더 쓸것인가? CPU라면 어디에나 "Pentium"이라는 이름이 있는것처럼 이 이름은 그레픽 시장의 어디에나 있다. 하지만 Pentium은 Core라는 이름으로 바꾸었다. ATI와 Nvidia가 주류 브랜드의 이름을 바꾸는것을 지켜보면 아주 재미있을것이다.
