Nforce fastest platform for AMD

It sure has some potential
By Fuad Abazovic, 06/09/2001 09:12:35 BST

AT ECTS I was able to investigate some things beside the usual meetings with PR persons and got some interesting information about Graphzilla's chipset performance.
As Nvidia is a newcomer to this core logic stuff, we obviously were not able to buy any boards based on the Nvidia chipset and so can't guess whether they'll offer any surprises in performance terms.

But sources close to AMD said thatNforce with its dual channel architecture should be a real performer. Basically, to make it simple, it should be the fastest AMD-equipped machine available, and even faster from the refreshed Via KT266A chipset.

Nvidia appears to have a major advantage over its competitor since it claims it will offer twice as much bandwidth than anyone else, using PC266/PC 2100 memory.

Basically, the KT 266A and the SiS 735 are able to achieve 2.1 GB/s while Nforce claims it will deliver twice that -- 4.2 GB/s.

There is just one catch That is, that in order to have the full performance from an Nforce board, you will need to populate it with two memory modules.

With current memory prices being so low, that shouldn't be a problem.

Why the third memory slot is so far away from the other two still escapes me, since I could not get any answer about it at the show. If I ever find out you will be the first to know.

Nforce can attack the chipset market very aggressively and it won't be long until we see the first boards from them. µ
