NVIDIA's New Mobile GPU Raises Bar on Performance and Battery Life
Advanced Features and High-Level Integration Allows Mobile Warriors to Go Far, Go Fast, and Go Everywhere
LAS VEGAS, COMDEX, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Addressing the major concerns of today's most demanding road warriors: battery life, DVD playback, performance, and size, NVIDIA¢ç Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA - news) today introduced their new-generation mobile graphics processing unit (GPU), code-named NV17M. With its stellar power management features, including NVIDIA's PowerMizer Technology; integrated Video Processing Engine (VPE); revolutionary antialiasing technology for superior display quality; and an ultra-efficient memory architecture?NVIDIA's new mobile GPU provides graphics capabilities previously unavailable on a portable platform.
``Our new-generation mobile GPU simultaneously addresses the conflicting demands of the mobile environment while delivering desktop-caliber performance,'' said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. ``NVIDIA dramatically altered the mobile computing environment with our original GeForce2 Go mobile GPU, and our newest GPU ensures notebook users of the fastest, most comprehensive and feature-rich computing experience ever realized on a mobile platform.''
NVIDIA's new-generation mobile GPU is also the first to feature custom antialiasing hardware designed specifically for notebook computers. With support for several high-performance, high-quality antialiasing modes, this new mobile GPU enables mobile users to experience very high frame rates and crisp, clean visuals -- despite the XGA resolution (1024 x 768) limitation of most notebook LCDs.
``Over the last year, Toshiba and our customers have recognized the immeasurable value that NVIDIA technology brings to the mobile market,'' said Oscar Koenders, vice president of product marketing, Toshiba Computer Systems Group. ``Our notebooks are designed to deliver the ultimate in performance and portability, and NVIDIA's next-generation mobile GPU's advanced performance and power saving features will provide our customers an uncompromised mobile experience.''
NVIDIA's new-generation mobile processor also features a new highly integrated package design. NVIDIA's Mobile AGP Package (MAP) provides an unprecedented level of flexibility and compatibility by squeezing a full AGP graphics subsystem -- including the GPU core and frame buffer up to 64MB -- into a space previously occupied by the GPU alone. This high level of integration ensures that the awesome performance and features of NVIDIA's new-generation mobile GPUs can be brought to market more rapidly, and integrated into notebook PCs of every size and price range imaginable.
PowerMizer Technology & VPE -- Delivering the Industry's Longest Battery Life
PowerMizer(TM), NVIDIA's dynamic power-modulation hardware and software technology, affords notebook users a full range of system power control. PowerMizer adapts to changing application demands and user preferences, and intelligently provides power only to the portions of the chip being used, delivering the most effective power reduction possible. Dedicated hardware, including the integrated MPEG2 decoder and 3D graphics engine, greatly reduces CPU utilization for DVD playback and 3D applications, and handles complex calculations faster, improving application performance and extending battery life.
The VPE improves overall system efficiency and performance by offloading critical tasks, such as the decoding, processing, and playback of video and DVD content from the CPU, and includes the most complete hardware MPEG2 decoder, sub picture alpha blend processor and de-interlacing circuitry to unequivocally deliver the industry's best video playback.
NVIDIA's new mobile GPUs are in volume production now and will be available in notebooks in early 2002.
