소니컴퓨터엔터테인먼트재팬(이하 SCEJ)이 자사의 차세대휴대형엔터테인먼트시스템’PlayStation®Vita’ (PS Vita)를 일본에서 2011년 12월 17일(토)부터 발매한다고 밝혔다.
새롭게 출시되는 PlayStation®Vita는 ARM Cortex-A9 쿼드코어 프로세서와 SGX543MP4 그래픽코어를 탑재했으며, 512MB 메모리를 제공함으로 기존 ‘PlayStation®Portable’ 및 ‘PlayStation®3’ 플랫폼상에서 실현해온 엔터테인먼트 체험을 더욱 진화시켜 고품질의 게임과 혁신적인 경험를 가능하게 한다.
12월 17일 발매되는 PlayStation®Vita는 '초회 한정판 에디션(PCH-1100 AA01)'과 '한정판 에디션(PCH-1100 AB01)', 그리고 일반 모델인 '크리스탈 블랙(PCH-1000 ZA01)' 3 가지 종류로 출시되며, 3G/Wi-Fi 모델은 GPS 기능을 지원한다.
한정판의 경우에는 가격이 29,980엔(약 43만원)이며, 일반 모델은 24,980엔(약 36만원)이며, 초회 한정판 및 한정판 에디션은 각각 데이터 플랜 100시간, 20시간이 제공되는 SIM 카드를 증정한다.
또한 발표와 동시에 26개의 PlayStation®Vita용 소프트웨어가 SCEJ 및 제작사에 의해 발표 될 예정이며, 이와 더불어 현재 74개 타이틀을 넘는 게임 소프트웨어의 추가 업데이트가 진행 중으로 총 100개 이상의 타이틀이 PlayStation®Vita에 순차 제공될 예정이다.(다음 리스트 참조)

SCEJ는 2011년 12월 17일의 발표를 맞이하여 일본에서 개최될 이벤트 등을 통해 소비자들에게 PlayStation®Vita의 매력을 소구함과 동시에 한층 더 휴대 게임기 시장의 확대를 강력하게 추진해갈 계획이며, 2011년 10월 15일(토)부터 PS Vita취급점에서 PS Vita의 예약 접수를 개시할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
